Corruption and wildlife crime

On Thursday 4th September, the APPG for International Conservation held a joint session with the APPG on Anti-Corruption and Responsible Tax, chaired by Joe Powell.

The joint session heard evidence from four speakers about the links between corruption and wildlife crime:

  • Ben Brock, Senior Researcher at TRAFFIC, explained the intersection of corruption and environmental crime specific to the illegal wildlife trade.

  • Jo Shaw, Executive Director of Save the Rhino, presented a case study on the role of corruption in rhino horn crimes around Kruger National Park in South Africa

  • Tom Johnson, Director of the Gecko Project, provided a case study on how jurisdictions facilitate the destruction of Indonesia’s rainforests.

  • Lisa Hartevelt, Chair of the Environmental Crime and Corruption Working Group at the UNCAC Coalition, discussed the efforts to raise environmental crime at the upcoming UNCAC CoSP in Abu Dhabi.
