Barry Gardiner MP, Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade, Europe, Energy and Climate Change, responding to comments from the Australian Trade Minister confirming that any negotiations on a trade deal with the UK are at least 2 and a half years away from starting, said:
“The Australian Trade Minister has today rebutted any ideas that the UK could have a trade deal ready to go when we leave the EU. Australia recognises that any negotiations can only begin once the UK has completed its negotiations to exit the EU and that this is at least 2 and a half years away.
“The International Trade Secretary’s belief that he would be able to line up a series of trade deals that would be ready when we leave the EU is looking increasingly naive.”
“In the new Toryspeak: Brexit means Brexit but International Trade Deal means Extempore Working Group.”
