Barry Gardiner MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade, Europe, Energy & Climate Change, responding to the Department for International Trade’s publication today -; ‘UK export opportunities remain strong after EU Referendum’ -; said:

“Today’s publication will do little to address the uncertainty about the future of the United Kingdom’s trade deals and once again highlights the Government’s failure to understand that investors need to have confidence in the long-term before they will invest in the infrastructure and operational resources required to engage in and develop their exports. That the International Trade Secretary thinks that telling businesses nothing will change for at least two years will provide that surety is staggering.

“Many businesses are unlikely to commit finance and resources to export activity that may only have a two year life cycle.

“If the Tory Government believe that nothing has changed they are kidding themselves, as far as investors and businesses are concerned: everything has changed.”
