Barry Gardiner MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy Secretary responding to the Government announcement that they will delay a decision on the Hinkley Point C power station, said:

“The Tories are in chaos. Delaying the decision on Hinkley at the eleventh hour shows a disregard for the 25,000 British jobs that depend on it and sends a disastrous message to the investor community that this Government is incapable of managing large scale infrastructure projects.

“Ministers have claimed Britain is open for business after the referendum, but this delay could deter the investors we need to build a strong economy.  This is an appalling signal to send and a humiliating diplomatic move.

“Theresa May must come clean. Is she delaying a decision to renegotiate the appalling deal for bill-payers she previously agreed as a member of the cabinet? Or is she trying to kill off the whole project? Whichever it is, the reality is that this Government has for six years failed to negotiate this contract in the country’s best interest and her final shambolic move puts investment, jobs and our energy security at risk.

“Labour will build a fairer and more sustainable economy by investing in our infrastructure and skills to deliver the low-cost, low-carbon but high-tech, high-wage economy we need for the future.”
