Working Hard for Brent North

Education not Segregation!

A good education is every child’s right. It is not a privilege reserved for the few. This is why we in the Labour Party have launched our new campaign, ‘Education not Segregation’, opposing the Tories’ plans to open new grammar schools.

Theresa May has spoken about delivering for everyone but her actions reveal the Tories’ true colours: working in the interests of the few while everyone else is left behind. In one breath talking of a “greater meritocracy” and in the next, announcing a return to grammar schools.

Grammar schools won’t improve the lives of the many; they offer nothing to the hundreds of children in Brent North who already have great schools where they are learning together. By returning to this failed project Theresa May is taking the Tories even further away from the realities of ordinary people's lives. Even former Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron said that rejecting the stale old grammars debate was a “key test” of whether the Tories were fit for government.

Labour is committed to an education system for everyone, not just a select few, and we will be opposing the Tory’s regressive grammar school policy every step of the way.
