My statement on why I am voting against the expansion of Heathrow tonight:
New airport infrastructure is essential for the UK to develop the trade links and business connections with emerging markets around the world.
Unfortunately the Government has failed to show how the expansion of Heathrow can achieve this in a way that is compatible with meeting our legally binding targets on climate change. This means the expansion does not pass Labour's 4 tests for supporting a third runway.
In order to deliver the connectivity we need for our economy the government cannot simply ignore the commitments we have made as part of the global community to tackle greenhouse gas emissions. By the second half of this century the global economy must be based on a net zero carbon infrastructure. The government should now focus on how it delivers this in a way that is consistent with being the global trading powerhouse we all want Britain to be.
For this reason I will be voting against the expansion of Heathrow tonight.
