Put your trust in me

Recent Activity

I have recently received a number of emails, calls and letters regarding the letter sent by the head teacher of Michaela Community School to the parents of children whose school dinner payments were overdue. Although the school itself is not within my constituency, a number of my constituents do attend the school.

I was shocked  by the contents of the letter. In my view it can never be right for a school to stigmatise children under its care. Any disputes with parents should be handled in a way that does not risk damage to the children.

Sadly, this is the kind of situation that arises when a Conservative government creates ‘Free Schools’ which operate outside of local democratic control and that are only accountable to the Secretary of State for Education.

It is up to the Secretary of State now to decide whether she considers this behaviour acceptable. I do not. If she agrees she must use her powers to intervene.

On his appointment to additional Shadow Cabinet portfolios today, Barry Gardiner said:

"I am delighted to have been appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade, Europe, Energy & Climate Change and look forward to working closely with the Shadow Foreign Secretary and the Shadow Secretary of State for Business. In this post referendum era where Britain has been overtaken by France, pushing us down from fifth to the sixth largest economy in the world, it has never been more important to re-establish the international standing of the United Kingdom. I will be putting out a strong message that the UK must become the best place for investors who understand that future growth lies in building a sustainable, low carbon economy"

In response to Theresa May’s decision to abolish the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Labour’s Barry Gardiner said:

We must see this decision in the context of other actions taken by the government.

They axed a world-leading competition for Carbon Capture and Storage, pulling the rug out from under investors at the last minute. They cut all support for the cheapest form of clean energy in onshore wind. They have left a black-hole for clean energy investment beyond 2021, providing no certainty for business.

Since the referendum they have talked up their commitment to our climate obligations. But in fact this government is downgrading action on climate change.

The rhetoric is positive, the actions are overwhelmingly negative.”
