Headteachers, parents and children up and down the country have been raising the alarm about the devastating School funding cuts which make it impossible to deliver a proper education.
Please find enclosed here my letter to the Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for School Standards, in anticipation of the upcoming Spending Review. You can also find attached my letters from December 2018 to Ministers on protecting funding for SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) students ahead of the Government’s Spending Review, and my concerns over the Government’s National Funding Formula statement (as well as the Minister’s reply).
In today’s letter, I have argued that the upcoming review must not be used as an opportunity to move the debate on from what we spend on public services to how we spend it. I have asked that the Minister commits to securing the vital funds needed for his department, and to ensure every child across the country and in my Brent North constituency has the support they need to get the best start in life.
School leaders in Brent do a wonderful job under increasingly difficult circumstances but faced with ever-decreasing real terms budgets they confront agonising decisions on whether to make further cuts to the number of qualified teachers, to axe support staff, to increase class sizes or to reduce curriculum choice. These are choices that should never have to be considered, much less implemented.
