Barry appears on ITV to call on the Police to do more to prevent people travelling to Syria

On 29th July 2015 Barry appeared on ITV to call on the authorities to do more to stop people from travelling to Syria after it emerged that a constituent of his had allegedly travelled to Syria despite his family having contacted the police to express their concerns about his intentions and whereabouts.

Barry expressed his serious concerns about the failure to coordinate a response which may have seen this young man prevented from travelling to Syria as the issue was not escalated immediately when the police received reports from the family of his constituent.

Speaking on ITV, Barry said:

"The police had notification since 11pm on Monday that this young man had absconded and the family were seriously concerned he was on his way to Syria.

"They had taken all that time, 24 hours, to do little more than take his computer for further investigation.

"This young man had come in from Paris that morning, he was then coming into Turkey later that day.

"He could have been apprehended coming into the country, he was not. There was failure to join up the response."
